our story
hello, we’re understory. we believe in systems thinking – that the connections between things are sometimes more important than the things themselves. The world doesn’t work in straight lines; it works as a living web – interconnected, interdependent, and dynamic.
at understory, we aim to see that web clearly. the most valuable insights often emerge when we look between the lines – in the relationships between data points, companies, and planetary systems.
we bring together environmental monitoring, earth observation companies, and publicly available data that measure different parts of planetary health – atmosphere, land, water, life – to reveal hidden patterns and relationships.
our goal is to turn fragmented information into insight that helps businesses and society prepare, adapt, and thrive in a changing world. as physical risks intensify – floods, droughts, storms, wildfires, heat stress, landslides – clarity becomes not just valuable, but essential. We help reveal how these systems fit together, so we can respond wisely – with knowledge that serves both society and the corporate world that deserves to stay.
we work to foster resilience, responsibility, and long-term value – supporting organizations that align their success with the stability of the planet.
-
we work humbly because the scale of the challenge demands it. planetary systems are complex beyond the grasp of any single person, team, or organization. Breached boundaries, ecological overshoot, and social inequality are not isolated problems with easy fixes – they are vast and interwoven.
that’s why our approach is grounded in continuous learning, curiosity, and collaboration. We embrace complexity rather than resist it – seeking patterns, not certainties.
we move from narrow to wide boundary, from isolation to relationships – connecting perspectives, partners, and data streams to see the whole more clearly.
-
understory draws inspiration from the thinkers, frameworks, and ideas that help make sense of complexity and see the world as an interconnected whole.
we’ve been influenced by systems thinkers like Donella Meadows, who taught us to look for patterns rather than parts; by environmental philosopher Timothy Morton’s idea of Hyperobjects – phenomena so vast in time and space (like forever chemicals or climate change) that they are extremely difficult to fully comprehend; and by frameworks like the planetary boundaries, which anchor our work in what the Earth can sustain.
we listen to conversations that stretch our perspective, like The Great Simplification, and Planet: Critical, which remind us how interconnected the world truly is and how much we still have to learn.
at heart, our inspiration is curiosity itself: a desire to understand the systems we depend on, and to turn that understanding into action. We keep that curiosity alive by venturing beyond our usual fields – learning from art, culture, and creative practice through the korp foundation.
-
In a forest, the understory is the rich layer of growth beneath the canopy and above the forest floor, an often-overlooked network of connections, cooperation and activity that supports everything above and below.
It mediates energy, nutrients, and communication across the forest, shaping the resilience of the entire system. that idea resonates with us. we want to work like the understory – quietly essential, weaving connections that strengthen the systems we all depend on.
our role isn’t to stand in the spotlight, but to support what grows above: companies, insights, and actions that make life on earth more resilient.
